Music: (About) 100 Words on Ludwig van Beethoven - Complete Music for Piano and Violoncello / Andras Schiff and Miklos Perenyi

Ludwig van Beethoven
Complete Music for Piano and Violoncello
Andras Schiff and Miklos Perenyi
ECM New Series 1819
2002

Once the inquisitive listener has had his or her fill of the Master's orchestral oeuvre there is no better direction to head than the Revolutionary from Bonn’s piano music. Gratefully, a survey has been recently been undertaken by the superb pianist Andras Schiff. Having conquered Bach and Mozart in grand style the Hungarian master turns his attention to Beethoven and with cellist Miklos Perenyi, produces a sparkling collection of the composer’s complete works for piano and cello. Schiff is nimble, presenting Beethoven in a crisp, crystalline light. Perenyi’s arco is warm and precise, capturing all “Beethovenisms” thrown his way. This set has no peer, including the Pierre Fournier-Friedrich Gulda set on Deutsche Gramophone.
